THE PICTURE

A good reference photo is essential to obtain an accurate and realistic drawing.

Important elements for a good photo = beautiful drawing

  • the frame

  • the light

  • Sharpness

Here is some example of quality photo

Sharpness
The sharpness of a photo is like a scalpel for the designer. It allows you to capture the smallest details of the subject, including the direction of the hair. A clear photo will create a more realistic and precise drawing.

in this photo, the sharpness is perfect

On this one,  it is much too vague, I would not be able to produce quality work.

Photo 8

Don't take your dog too far,  because by zooming in on the photo, you can no longer see enough details

The luminosity

Natural light is the key to quality drawing.

If you must take a photo indoors, position your subject near a window to take advantage of natural light.

The frame
Framing is an important element of drawing because it highlights the subject and creates an interesting composition.

Example of bad framing

Photo 1

We don't see your dog's expression enough

Photo 2

The muzzle is in the foreground, sharp and contrasted, the rest is blurred and faded

Photo 3

Avoid putting yourself in the photo

Photo 4

The dog's neck is cut and the muzzle is blurred
